Clean River, Green Future

Last spring, the Green Club of Nguyen Trai High School started a project called "Clean River, Green Future". Every Sunday morning, about forty students gathered by the Kim River, a small river near their school. The river used to be full of plastic bags, bottles and other rubbish. Local people often threw waste into the water, and the river became dirty and smelly.

The students worked in small teams. Some collected rubbish along the banks, while others put up signs saying "Please do not throw rubbish here". They also planted more than two hundred young trees along the river. To raise money for gloves and trash bags, the club sold old newspapers and bottles for recycling.

After three months, the river looked much cleaner. Birds came back, and people in the neighbourhood began to keep the area clean, too. "At first, we only wanted to clean our river," said Lan, the club leader. "But now we understand that protecting the environment is everyone's job."

The project taught the students many things. They learned how to work in a team, and they felt proud of making their hometown greener. The club plans to continue the project next school year and hopes more schools will join them.
