PART 3 — READING. Read the following passage and choose the best answer A, B, C or D for each question (21–25).
Life in the Cities of Tomorrow
What will city life be like in thirty years' time? In many parts of the world, planners are already building smart cities where technology is used to make life safer, cleaner and more comfortable for city dwellers.
One of the biggest changes will be in transport. Buses and trains will run on electricity and drive themselves, so passengers will no longer worry about traffic jams or road accidents. Sensors under the roads will collect information about traffic and send it to a central computer, which will control the traffic lights to keep vehicles moving smoothly. People will also share electric bikes and cars instead of owning private vehicles, which will cut down air pollution in crowded city centres.
Smart technology will also change people's homes. Before you arrive home, your house will know that you are coming: the lights will switch on by themselves, the air conditioner will set the perfect temperature, and the fridge will remind you if you are running out of milk. In the streets, rubbish bins will send a signal to the cleaning service when they are full, so public spaces will always stay clean and tidy. Even the buildings themselves will produce clean electricity from the solar panels on their roofs and glass walls.
However, experts warn that smart cities must protect people's private information. If every movement is recorded by cameras and sensors, city dwellers may feel that they are being watched all the time. For this reason, the cities of the future should not only be smart and sustainable, but also safe and fair for everyone who lives there.
